Indeed, it's never too early

With 144 days left, what could be more important than Oscar buzz? Most certainly not anything going on at our respective workplaces.

So, to add to the list of must-sees, even if your right mind says "only if $4.99 and my couch gets me there".... I hereby offer..

I was already in a forgiving mood where Clooney's Gravity performance was concerned, as I had just seen the preview for his telling of the historical "The Monuments Men". More Nazi killing, but for the sake of saving art history? OK. Clooney, Damon, Murray, Goodman and Blanchett? OK some more. Will the Academy dig this? I'm betting my two wins on a solid nod.

No, it's not Boogie Nights 2, but the promotional efforts, ie:  series of  movie posters featuring the major stars, seem to capture some of the essence of our favorite porno-masterpiece. Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Louis C.K. and Michael Pena will all be arriving in Christmas stockings in the form of American Hustle this year (advance showings 12-13). Con artists + FBI + politics+ crazy ass wife who can screw the whole plan up = the stuff the Academy digs, baby.

OK... hate me for it.,,, but we may have to spend 4 hours with Mr. Hanks this year. That's all I'm going to say.

Too early? NEVER!

Everyone please give it up to Ms. Kofi Jones for getting us kicked off this year with her Gravity review (see below).
Here are just a few from the early buzz list.

Nebraska (2013): Bruce Dern and Will Forte for heaven’s sake, Will Forte! Directed by Alexander Payne (The Descendants) be prepared for his typical quirky style of showing you America’s family dysfunction. Just remember, you can’t spell dysfunction without v-o-d-k-a.
US Release Date: November 15

Yes, THAT Will Forte.

I am running to get my Oscar, BACK OFF Oprah!

12 Years a Slave (2013): Directed by Steve McQueen, this movie has absolutely everyone in it that wasn’t in Lincoln. There are rumors that studios are holding back release dates until 2014 because this movie is just going to crush it. We are hoping this knocks the Hallmark Channel-esque The Butler completely out of consideration.

US Release Date: October 31

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013): The Coen Brothers & JT.  It’s enough to make me forgive them for casting Carey Mulligan (Why don’t I like her? Is it just me?)

US Release Date: December 20

August: Osage County (2013): Director John Wells give us, gird your loins ladies…Ewan McGregor, Dermot Mulroney, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper and of course Benedict Cumberbatch…because quite frankly we’re not making any more movies without Mr. Cumberbatch, to which Ashley and I say thank you, thank you VERY much Mr. Hollywood Producer.
US Release Date: December 25 (limited)

OK who’s got some more? What do you hear? What do you know?

ENJOY THE SILENCE

In space… there is no sound. You are alone. So, too, is Sandra Bullock for the majority of GRAVITY. To say she holds her own is an understatement almost as vast as the space through which she tumbles in this truly stunning technical masterpiece. OK… I got to do the vast thing.

I have never been much of a Bullock fan. I’ve viewed her as a perfectly adequate ingenue or reasonably amusing comedienne. Forgettable. I will admit that she has made herself memorable. Her breath and eyes will own you quickly.

I give away nothing to those who have seen the trailers in saying that as first time space traveler Ryan Stone, Bullock is, literally, lost in space. What happens next is the question you are left asking nearly every minute for the duration of the film. Suspense isn’t an adequate word. Anxiety comes close. Gravity is nerve-wracking.

Technically, Clooney shares billing, but I’ll admit his cheeky performance left me a bit cold. The true co-stars are Alfonso CuarĂ³n, Emmanuel Lubezki, and visual-effects supervisor Tim Webber, who will convince you they themselves took Riley Martin on his ill fated journey. Shifting points of view, weightlessness, and seemingly impossible shots that sweep from earth to space station to pupil require nothing short of a 3D/IMAX experience.

Ultimately, and obviously, this film is meant to be a story of one– a voyage within, and it does that.  Moving through all appropriate stages due a frantic fight for survival in the greatest of unknowns, Stone lets you in. You get invested and hope for her survival… it’s simple in this way.

Gravity, however, is not a flawless film. My greatest complaint – I would have enjoyed more silence. I cringed more than once at hokey script, and would have turned down the score and let the lack of sound in space speak more often. It is also, at times, impossible to believe.. but suspension of disbelief should come with putting a pair of 3-D glasses on, one would think.

One truth….the filmmaking itself is close to flawless… it’s complex in this way.
See it.
