Worst Oscar Snubs of All Times
We've all been there, well prepped for the Oscars, all filmed up, in our Sunday best. We eagerly monitor the Red Carpet, offering applause of approval for those who emerge dressed in impeccable Versace, Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy, and throw up our arms in disgust as some douche-lord decides that this is the time to branch out and try something outside the box (please refer to previous DDL insert).
Ah, the never-ending supply of "what were they thinking?"
But the truest disappointment often comes from the Academy itself... either in its nominees, or worst yet, in its final decisions.
So, I offer you here, the opportunity to lash out against the (albeit sacred) Academy for its greatest miscalculations.
Dear Academy... WTF? What were YOU thinking?
My contribution. Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream) loses to Julia Roberts (Erin freaking Brockovich)

In spite of everyone else who even showed up on set for Sideways getting a nomination, Paul Giamatti did NOT get nod for this movie. Whether you liked or disliked this movie is immaterial to the fact that if the academy is thinking about giving an Oscar to Hayden Church (yeah, Lowell from Wings) it shouldn't have the enormous balls to overlook Giamatti who was pitch perfect from start to finish.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% with the Ellen Burstyn Snub... Eff Julia Roberts. My snub moment is that "The English Patient" beat out Fargo for Best picture way back when. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Ralph Fiennes BUT that movie was the most boring movie that ever bored around boring town. All these years later we can all quote every line from Fargo and I will literally watch it any time it is on... The English Patient... not so much.
ReplyDeleteI so whole-heartedly agree with this. It took me three separate sittings to get through The English Patient and there is nothing I don't love about everyone it, well I guess I don't love that they were all in this movie.
DeleteProwler needs a jump!
he's fleeing the interview.....
ReplyDeleteI'm 100% on board Fargo. It's in the Sacred 10 (which I have - an even 10)
Obviously on this list is a recent victim - Take Shelter. Last years crop could not hold a candle to this amazing film which, to me, included the most brilliantly understated ending in recent film history.
Looking much farther back - I believe our beloved Spielberg was overlooked for Jaws in 1975 - not even a nomination. Time for revenge?
Oh my gosh I loved Take Shelter so much!
ReplyDeleteFrom Author Timothy Sexton:
ReplyDelete"Yes, ladies and gentlemen, what you've heard is not a rumor, but fact: Cher is an Academy Award-winning actress, but Glenn Close is not. There's two words for a universe in which that sentence isn't satire, but I'll clean up the language. Messed up."
Maybe not in the category "of all time" but focusing on this year, after seeing ZD30 it is INSANE that Silver Linings gets a nod for director and Zero Dark Thirty does not. Insane.
